Black Quotidian: Everyday History in African-American Newspapers

August 12, 1972

On August 12, 1972, the Chicago Defender featured Betty Jean Thomas as the paper’s “Page One Miss.” Thomas graduated from Kozminski Grammar School and Hyde Park High School and “finds dancing, swimming, sewing and cooking exotic meals while entertaining friends at her Southside pad to be her cup of tea.” The Defender started the “Page One Miss” feature in October 1971 with radio disc jockey Elaine “Chili” Chiles. The feature appears to have run only in 1971 and 1972.
