Black Quotidian: Everyday History in African-American Newspapers

August 28, 2001

On August 28, 2001, the Philadelphia Tribune mourned the death of Aaliyah. “Like Otis Redding and Tupac Shakur before her, success and death came early for R&B singer and actress Aaliyah,” Shonda McClain-Hill wrote in the Tribune. “A career that began at the age of 6 came to a tragic end Saturday, when the 22-year-old entertainer was killed, along with eight others, after a small plane crashed Saturday in the Bahamas.” The article noted that the Brave New World nightclub in Center City had a moment of silence for Aaliyah as soon as the deejay received the tragic news at 1:45 a.m. The Tribune's front page also included an article regarding the investigation of the plane crash.
