Black Quotidian: Everyday History in African-American Newspapers

August 6, 1966

On August 6, 1966, the Norfolk Journal and Guide ran an advertisement for newspaper carriers that featured seventeen-year-old Vernon Lee Holmes. “The son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Smith, 505 Southern Branch Road, he is in 10th grade at Crestwood High School,” the ad read. “In addition to capably serving his GUIDE route he has gained a reputation as an expert grass cutter and is in constant demand. Vernon attends the First Baptist Church, Crestwood. He wants to become a professional baseball player, and is learning the rudiments of the game by playing rightfield with the Crestwood Hornets.”
