Black Quotidian: Everyday History in African-American Newspapers

January 17, 1953

On January 17, 1953, the Chicago Defender featured pictures from a debutante ball hosted by the Royal Coterie of Snakes, one of Chicago’s all-male social organizations. The caption of the photo of the young women read: “A big moment in the lives of eleven young Chicagoans of the elite set came when they made their bow before top South Side society in the beautiful Parkway ballroom. Dazzling in gowns of traditional white, the lovely lassies won the hearts of the crowd with their demureness and charm.”
