Black Quotidian: Everyday History in African-American Newspapers

August 2, 1958

On August 2, 1958, the front page of the Norfolk Journal and Guide ran a United Press International story on Ghanian Prime Minister Kwame Nkrumah being welcomed back to Harlem. “An estimated 10,000 persons greeted the leader of the 16-month-old African republic during a parade up Seventh avenue,” the article reported. “Later about 7,500 persons, including United Nations undersecretary Dr. Ralph J. Bunche gathered to pay tribute to Dr. Nkrumah in a Harlem armory.” (Click to view article PDF.)
