On November 29, 1984, the Los Angeles Sentinel reported that California Assemblywoman Maxine Waters and local civil rights leaders held a demonstration at the Beverly Hills offices of the South African Consulate to protest apartheid. Waters, who went on to serve in the U.S. Congress, said the protest was a “revival of the Civil Rights movement. We’re prepared to sit-in, walk-in, cry-in, confront-in, to do what’s necessary to end apartheid and free the (political) prisoners.”
