Barbee, the first woman and first African American elected County Commissioner for Guilford County (North Carolina), was killed in a car accident shortly after she was elected. Barbee was a graduate of Smith College and New York University and was a humanities professor at North Carolina A&T State University, where she also coached the debate team.
