Black Quotidian: Everyday History in African-American Newspapers

August 13, 1955

On August 13, 1955, the Cleveland Call and Post included the column “On the Divorce Docket.” The column, which ran regularly from 1953 to 1967, updated readers on divorce proceedings in the city’s Common Pleas Court. The August 13 column discussed six couples, including: “Mrs. Adalee M. Crew, 1351 E. 11th St., [who] accused her husband, Rufus S. Crew, of failure to be a kind and loving husband, developing a morose attitude toward her and their two children, and improper support...Crew often becomes uncommunicative and won’t talk to his wife and children for days at a time...Now Mrs. Crew said she wants a divorce, custody of the children, alimony, support and that he be enjoined from disposing of his interest in their home and their automobile. In the final settlement she wants the home and car awarded to her as part of the alimony.”
