DeVore, who was represented by lawyer and activist Florynce Kennedy, charged that Life’s October 1969 cover story on black models only mentioned white-owned modeling agencies and that these agencies gained bookings at the expense of DeVore’s agency. “I don't think I can overemphasize the effect the article has had on us,” DeVore said. “As consumers, we—black people—made demands on the media to bring in black models, and the power structure had to go along with it. Now that they’re accepted, the credit won’t be placed where it should be—on the black community.”
