Locke, along with professor of mathematics Alonzo Brown, professor of French Metz T. P. Lochard, and finance professor Orlando Thornton, was fired from Howard University 1925 after the trustees undertook a “program of retrenchment.” Howard alumni opposed the decision and welcomed Locke’s return to the university.
