The African-American Family History Association held a Saturday afternoon meeting at the Georgia Department of Archives and History. “The Association will promote the interest in the study of African-American genealogy and related history through various educational programs, research activities and publications,” the Daily World reported. The event was influenced by the publication and broadcast of Alex Haley’s Roots several months earlier. Haley’s story prompted millions of Americans to research their family histories. The featured guest speaker at the Atlanta event was James D. Walker, a National Archives staff member who served as a consultant for Haley. (Click to view article PDF.)
