Black Quotidian: Everyday History in African-American Newspapers

July 6, 1950

On July 6, 1950, the first page of the Los Angeles Sentinel’s society section featured four large pictures of African Americans enjoying swimming pools. Three of the pictures were from South Park pool on the city’s Eastside, including one photo with a dozen “young mermaids” in swimsuits and swim caps. The fourth picture highlighted Dr. and Mrs. John Coleman of South Gramercy Place who were “among the lucky Angelenos who have a modern swimming pool on the grounds of their smart California home.” (Click to view PDF.)
