July 27, 1939

On July 27, 1939, the Los Angeles Sentinel’s front page announced that Rubye Pollard-Reid was opening a dress shop. “Pollard-Reid owns and operates the famous Flo-Ru-Mal Dress Shoppe with beauty salon in Dallas, Tex., which is nationally reknown [sic] for its distinctive women’s wear, is equipping the building at 5505 Central avenue for a similar business which will be without exaggeration the finest of its kind ever to be operated on Central avenue.” The Sentinel featured several advertisements for Pollard-Reid’s “Avenue Shoppe” in 1939 and 1940.
