12019-03-12T23:57:28+00:00Stanford University Pressaf84c3e11fe030c51c61bbd190fa82a3a1a1282413plainpublished2019-08-21T10:06:26+00:00AnonymousOn July 31, 1909, the Chicago Defender ran a piece titled “Westward Ho!” on traveling by train over the Santa Fe Trail. “It is often remarked that everybody is traveled nowadays, that everybody has gone from the ‘turbulent waters of the Atlantic to the shores of the placid Pacific, and from the banks of the icy lakes to the tropical lands around the Gulf,’ and that many have crossed the pond and journeyed even through the Orient,” Mildred Miller wrote. “Notwithstanding these facts the Defender has many readers who for diverse reasons do not get very far from the comforts of their own firesides (ahem, radiators), and these dear home friends are ones who are cordially invited to enjoy this little Western tour with us.”
