On December 30, 1916, the Philadelphia Tribune ran an obituary on the front page for Sarah Sedgewick Bowers-Bell, a concert soprano known as the “colored Nightingale.” The Tribune described her as a “member of one of the oldest families in the city,” and her brothers John and Thomas Bowers were also accomplished musicians.168
