Black Quotidian: Everyday History in African-American Newspapers

June 11, 1921

On June 11, 1921, the Philadelphia Tribune featured an advertisement for a stage performance of “Parlor, Bedroom and Bath” by the Lafayette Players. The Lafayette Players were a company of African-American actors with groups in Harlem, Chicago, and Philadelphia.  Cleo Desmond and Andrew Bishop were the two featured players in this production of “Parlor, Bedroom and Bath.” “Parlor, Bedroom and Bath” became a movie in 1931 starring Buster Keaton and Charlotte Greenwood.

Desmond, Bishop, and the Lafayette Players were praised in this 1929 Chicago Defender article, “Our Stage History, Almost Forgotten, Is Well Worth Knowing and Being Proud Of.”
