Black Quotidian: Everyday History in African-American Newspapers

February 12, 1949

Today’s post from the February 12, 1949, edition of the Baltimore Afro-American continues the Valentine’s Day theme from yesterday. The paper published a short story by Van Henderson II called “Grow Old With Me.” I have not been able to find any additional information about Van Henderson in the ProQuest newspaper database or Google, so I do not know anything about his life or whether he published other stories. On this day, at least, he offered readers a nice vignette regarding a black couple in love. The story begins: “It was only yesterday, it seems, though actually it was thirty years ago, to be exact, when I met my wife, Janet. It must have been by the grace of God that we were to meet, for there she was, my whole life before me—me, of all persons, who had vowed that I would never allow another woman to enter my life” (click to view PDF).
