On May 13, 1961, Cleveland Call and Post columnist John Fuster announced two upcoming dances hosted by deejay Eddie O’Jay, as well as a number of other musical events in the city. Eddie O’Jay was a black radio pioneer in Cleveland, and the Canton, Ohio, band of Eddie Levert, Walter Williams, William Powell, Bobby Massey, and Bill Isles took the name “The O’Jays” in tribute to the deejay.
