On June 19, 1954, the New York Amsterdam News ran an article promoting The Negro Travelers’ Green Book. Published from 1936 to 1964 by Harlem mailman Victor H. Green, The Negro Travelers’ Green Book provided black motorists and tourists with information regarding safe and comfortable places to board, dine, and sightsee during the era of segregation. The Amsterdam News article described the Green Book as “the beacon of light for the traveler and the vacationist in the United States—the main instrument in making the Negro’s travels more pleasant.” Visit the New York Public Library Digital Collections to view digital copies of the Green Book.
