On July 9, 1927, the Baltimore Afro-American reported that Alain Leroy Locke was returning to his position as professor of philosophy at Howard University. Locke, along with professor of mathematics Alonzo Brown, professor of French Metz T. P. Lochard, and finance professor Orlando Thornton, was fired from Howard University 1925 after the trustees undertook a “program of retrenchment.” Howard alumni opposed the decision and welcomed Locke’s return to the university.
