Black Quotidian: Everyday History in African-American Newspapers

October 20, 1949

On October 20, 1949, the Los Angeles Sentinel carried a report from journalist Robert J. Smith aboard the USS El Dorado in the Pacific Ocean.  Smith reported on a “mock invasion of the Hawaiian Islands to retake it from the simulated ‘enemy invader’ by the use of amphibious assaults upon the famous resort beaches of Oahu.”
