On October 16, 1965, the New York Amsterdam News ran an article regarding Mrs. Phyllis Shearer, who was “the first Negro woman to seek a judicial post in Westchester County.” This article gives the reader insight into what was actually occurring during the civil rights movement, as this woman wanted to find a judicial position. She was actively participating in the civil rights movement. I specifically chose this article because it was relevant to the area that I live in, Putnam County, New York, which borders Westchester County. It was fascinating to see that Mrs. Phyllis Shearer was courageous enough to go out and be the first African American to attempt to search for this judicial position.
