Black Quotidian: Everyday History in African-American Newspapers

October 24, 1942

On October 24, 1942, the front page of the Norfolk Journal and Guide featured a picture of Academy Award winner Hattie McDaniel in uniform.  McDaniel was a member of the American Women’s Voluntary Services (AWVS), an organization that provided support services during World War II, such as truck and ambulance driving, message delivery, selling war bonds, and aircraft spotting.
