McDaniel was a member of the American Women’s Voluntary Services (AWVS), an organization that provided support services during World War II, such as truck and ambulance driving, message delivery, selling war bonds, and aircraft spotting. Like McDaniel, actresses Joan Crawford, Lillian Randolph, and Betty White were also members of the AWVS.
