September 2, 1950


On September 2, 1950, the Norfolk Journal and Guide featured a brief profile of Samuel A. McElwee in a series called “They'll Never Die” by Elton Fax. McElwee was born into slavery and went on to be elected to the Tennessee State Legislature in 1882. He was ousted from office in 1888 when his opponents, conservative Democrats, used fraud and intimidation to reduce the number of the black voters in the counties McElwee represented.
