Black Quotidian: Everyday History in African-American Newspapers

November 26, 1959

On November 26, 1959, the Atlanta Daily World published a “Negro History Quiz,” which asked readers to match a name and title (e.g., Althea Gibson and “Queen of Tennis”). Among the twenty-five names are figures who are still well known today, such as Jesse Owens, Sarah Vaughan, and Cab Calloway, as well as many whose names do not regularly appear in history textbooks, such as Norman McGhee (founded first black-owned brokerage firm), actress Claudia McNeil, and Freda DeKnight (Ebony food editor and cookbook writer).
