Among the twenty-five names are figures who are still well known today, such as Jesse Owens, Sarah Vaughan, and Cab Calloway, as well as many whose names do not regularly appear in history textbooks, such as Norman McGhee (founded first black-owned brokerage firm), actress Claudia McNeil, and Freda DeKnight (Ebony food editor and cookbook writer).
