12019-03-12T23:57:35+00:00June 30, 19343plainpublished2019-08-21T10:45:07+00:00On June 30, 1934, the New York Amsterdam News ran an article congratulating the city’s recent high school graduates. “Scores of Negro students yesterday were in possession of New York City high school diplomas after a week of graduation exercises,” the article began. “At Julia Richman, 317 East Sixty-seventh street, where 659 seniors were graduated Thursday night, a Harlem girl, Mildred Kimble, 15, of 167 West 146th street, was second in scholarship. She was one of three students to receive $100 scholarships. Miss Kimble expects to enter Hunter College and prepare to teach business subjects.” The article went on to lists dozens of other black graduates from the city’s high schools (click to view PDF of article).
