12019-03-12T23:58:12+00:00September 24, 19603plainpublished2019-08-21T17:46:52+00:00On September 24, 1960, the Chicago Defenderran a column by sports editor Lee Jenkins noting that Olympic light heavyweight champion Cassius Marcellus Clay (later Muhammad Ali) was preparing to turn pro. “The gleam of golden fistic rewards burns brightly in the eyes of the recent gold medal winner,” Jenkins wrote. “His course is pretty well laid out and illuminated by the bright lights and fat paychecks [that] have been strewn along the path of another Olympic champion...heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson.” Jenkins concluded, “From all indications and from the guys who are supposed to know good boxing material, Clay is supposed to have the potential.”
