• 1 2019-03-12T23:56:31+00:00 December 24, 1932 5 plain published 2019-11-04T21:13:41+00:00 On December 24, 1932, the Chicago Defender reported that the newspaper was part of a successful protest against the showing of The Birth of a Nation at Cinema Art theater (Chicago Ave. and Michigan Blvd.): “The Chicago Defender was the only newspaper in the city that carried an article opposing the showing of this picture, and aroused public sentiment against it so strongly that the theater was picketed Tuesday afternoon by a group of Race and white ‘workers’ carrying banners demanding that all Jim Crow pictures be abolished and that segregation and discrimination be wiped out entirely.” This 1932 protest was one of the many African-American protests against The Birth of a Nation.
