Black Quotidian: Everyday History in African-American Newspapers

May 18, 1954

On May 18, 1954, the Atlanta Daily World reported on the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark decision in the Brown v. Board of Education case. “The Supreme Court unanimously outlawed racial segregation in the public schools yesterday as a violation of constitutional guarantee of equality to all,” Darrell Garwood reported for the International News Service. “The momentous decision put off until next fall any action on the integration of white and Negro public school students in the 21 states and the district of Columbia where segregation has been practiced” (click to view PDF of article). The Chicago Defender carried the same story with the more strongly worded headline, “Kill Jim Crow Schools.”
