Black Quotidian: Everyday History in African-American Newspapers

June 10, 1965

On June 10, 1965, the Los Angeles Sentinel highlighted the NCAA tennis championships which featured UCLA star Arthur Ashe. “Some 90 top collegiate tennis stars from throughout the country are converging on UCLA for the opening of play next Monday in the 81st annual NCAA net championships on the Westwood campus courts—and the pre-tourney favorite is Arthur Ashe of the host Bruins, the No. 1 Negro netter of all time.” Ashe won the 1965 singles title and led UCLA to the team championship.

Arthur Ashe, of course, went on to become one of the greatest tennis players of all time, and he was an activist who fought against apartheid in South Africa.

Ashe was coached and mentored by Dr. Robert “Whirlwind” Johnson. Johnson also mentored Althea Gibson and opened doors for other black tennis players.
