Black Quotidian: Everyday History in African-American Newspapers

February 11, 1928

On February 11, 1928, the Chicago Defender’s Junior page brought Valentine greetings to readers. The Defender Junior was billed as the “Children’s Greatest Weekly” (a play on the paper's “World's Greatest Weekly” slogan) and described as “a page of real live features of interest to children readers.” This edition of the Defender Junior include suggestions for hosting a Valentine’s Day party:

“Valentine Menu: Refreshments suggestive of Valentine sentiment might be served on heart-shaped trays made of cardboard covered with red paper: Creamed Chicken in Heart Timbales; ‘Heart Beet’ Salad; Ice Cream in Heart Molds; Heart-Shaped Cakes”

“The easiest invitation to prepare for a Valentine party is to paste a small red gummed heart sticker on a correspondence card and then write on the card this invitation rhyme: We’ll celebrate Saint Valentine in a good old-fashioned way. With Cupids, hearts and verse and rhyme. So don’t forget the day.”
