On January 11, 1975, the Norfolk Journal and Guide reported on the tragic death of Zoe Barbee. Barbee, the first woman and first African American elected County Commissioner for Guilford County (North Carolina), was killed in a car accident shortly after she was elected. Barbee was a graduate of Smith College and New York University and was a humanities professor at North Carolina A&T State University, where she also coached the debate team
